Studying with a Chronic pain illness

Maybe Life isn’t about avoiding the bruises. Maybe it’s about collecting the scars to prove we showed up for it” – Hannah Brencher

Studying without illness is sometimes hard and daunting, but when you also live with a chronic illness it can be even more difficult to get through the day and start or finish your work. It’s important to tell your tutors of your difficulties so they are able to support you with your issues whilst you study. You will find that many are very understanding and willing to help their students.

For many who live with chronic pain it is present all of the time. The thought of starting a degree or other form of study sounds impossible. However, studying can be a welcome distraction to the intractable pain and symptoms of chronic illnesses. It’s important to pace yourself so you don’t become overworked. Set aside time for the work you need to do, but allow yourself frequent breaks. Those that study with bodywide pain know how much of a toll one day of studying can have on the body. I rest in bed as soon as I come home. The pain is severe and very difficult to deal with. However, there are some things you can do to help. Take it easy when you come home from a day of studying. Take a hot bath with epsom salt or Dead Sea salts. These contain magnesium which is known to be beneficial for chronic pain as it produces a relaxing effect. Many with chronic illness are also deficient in magnesium. Magnesium oil spray for your joints and muscles can also be soothing. None of these take the pain away, but the benefits are relaxing.

Whilst being in class for any period of time is painful. It is worth it in order to gain invaluable education. I can show that I’ve done something. I can show that my illness isn’t going to take over me. I’m not saying those that don’t study are lazy. I’m saying do not let it take control. Whilst it is painful and there is no cure it is not going to take my life. I’m going to take it and do with it what I can.

I’m currently studying and suffer from chronic illness. It’s so hard sometimes to manage symptoms as well as getting the work done!
